IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE. STOP FUNDING CRUELTY!

Around the world, animals are part of many experiences designed to entertain, educate, or create memorable moments.

From zoos and wildlife parks to petting farms, cafés, and animal-assisted activities, these encounters can feel harmless and even positive. Many people genuinely believe they are supporting animals by visiting these places. However, not all animal experiences are created equal, and good intentions do not always translate into good outcomes for the animals involved. That is why doing your due diligence before engaging in any form of animal entertainment is so important.

The Difference Between Care and Convenience:

Animals used in entertainment are often expected to perform, interact, or be available on demand. While some facilities prioritise animal welfare, others place convenience, profit, or visitor satisfaction above the animal’s physical and emotional needs.

Animals are not props. They are living beings with limits, preferences, and stress responses. When those limits are ignored, even seemingly gentle activities can become harmful over time.

An animal may appear calm or compliant, but that does not always mean they are comfortable. Many animals freeze, withdraw, or shut down when they are stressed. These behaviours are often mistaken for being well-trained or relaxed, when in reality they are signs of fear, exhaustion, or drugging.

Why Appearance Can Be Misleading:

A clean environment, friendly staff, or positive reviews do not automatically mean an animal’s welfare is being prioritised. Social media, in particular, can present a polished version of reality that hides what happens behind the scenes.

Important questions are often left unanswered. How long are the animals handled each day? Do they have a choice or the ability to retreat? Are they bred specifically for interaction? Are they given time away from people? Are veterinary care and enrichment part of daily life, or only when something goes wrong?

Without asking these questions, it is easy to unknowingly support practices that compromise animal welfare.

The impact of demand:

Animal entertainment exists because there is demand for it. Every ticket purchased, booking made, or photo shared reinforces the idea that animals should be available for human enjoyment.

This does not mean people are cruel for wanting to connect with animals. It means that responsibility comes with that desire. When we choose experiences carefully, we encourage higher standards across the industry. When we do not, harmful practices continue because they are profitable.

Ethical Experiences Do Exist:

It is important to acknowledge that not all animal-related experiences are harmful. Ethical sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres often play a vital role in conservation, education, and rescue. These organisations place animal welfare first, limit interaction, and prioritise the animal’s needs over entertainment.

The key difference is whether the experience exists for the animal’s benefit or primarily for human enjoyment.

How to Do Your Due Diligence:

Before visiting or supporting any place that uses animals, take time to research and ask questions. Look for transparency about animal care, enrichment, and rest periods. Be cautious of experiences that allow constant handling, selfies, or unrestricted interaction. Consider whether the animals have choice, space, and the ability to behave naturally.

If something feels uncomfortable or unclear, it is okay to walk away. Choosing not to participate is also a form of advocacy.

Education Leads to Better Choices:

At Mission Paws’ible, we believe that education is the foundation of meaningful change. When people are informed, they make better choices for animals. Awareness does not require judgment or blame. It simply requires curiosity, responsibility, and compassion.

Animals cannot consent to how they are used in entertainment. That responsibility sits with us.

By doing our research, asking questions, and supporting ethical practices, we can help shift the focus from entertainment to welfare and ensure that animals are treated with the respect they deserve, wherever we are in the world.
