An estimated 600,000+ stray dogs live across Bali, with thousands more born every month. Without large-scale sterilisation and vaccination, the cycle continues. Puppies are born into suffering, disease spreads, and more sick and injured animals end up on the streets, beaches and outside businesses tourists visit every day.
Rabies remains a very real threat in Bali. Since returning to the island in 2008, outbreaks continue to impact both local communities and visitors. Bali has recorded human deaths from rabies, and thousands of people require post-bite vaccinations every year. The majority of rabies transmission comes from unvaccinated dogs.
Healthy, vaccinated and sterilised street dogs create safer communities, reduce aggressive behaviour linked to mating and territorial fights, lower rabies risk, and improve the overall experience for locals and tourists alike.
